The Checkmate Pendulum educates and enlightens at least as much as it entertains. Mr. Costa's vast global and political experience, and, his clear mastery of economic and financial institutions gives readers an unprecedented look "into the machine" as it were. And inside of course, we find ourselves, in a manner of speaking. People with different experiences, lives, visions and hopes, caught up in a maelstrom of different interests and intentions.
The book is truly frightening as it shows how close the line between fact and fiction has become. With the growing sophistication in finance, politics and war, embedded in continued hyper advances in technology, "intent" is the only remaining differentiator between fact and fiction. The intent to do good or bad, however that may be defined from the myriad perspectives the book portrays.
The book drives home how small we all are in this game no matter how big the shoes we fill. And yet, how much of an impact an individual might have. History defines the future on the personal and global scale. The future is subject, however, to twists of fate so eloquently portrayed in this book, and hopefully, to something more divine.
Kudos to Antonio Costa for capturing so much in such a small space. We all leave a little awestruck, a little overwhelmed and definitely a little wiser.
